Beulah Rosen Committee

Beulah Rosen (pictured) was a charter member of the UU Fellowship of Ligonier Valley. She was born Beulah Shannon in Pittsburgh, PA in 1908 and is fondly remembered by members for her cheery disposition and her love of life and friends. Barbara Jones’ eulogy at her memorial service described her well,”She made each of us feel unique and as though each of us were her best friend.”

Beulah loved her rustic home in the woods that she and her husband Alex built as well as the animals and plants that surrounded her there. She and Alex enjoyed traveling and after his death, she continued to travel whenever she could. She had an intense curiosity about various cultures and yearned to learn from different people. In her lifetime of travels, she was able to visit all the continents except Antarctica. One of her fondest memories was that of a boat trip on the Amazon River in the 1940’s, where she met a gentleman from Germany who was doing research. Their friendship rekindled by happenstance after Alex’s death and the two old friends visited each other and kept in contact until his death.

In her professional life, Beulah had been an educator in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and Ligonier Valley School District and also a guidance counselor in the Norwin School District. As a child she had been a Girl Scout and later became a Girl Scout leader.

She was an early organizer of the UUFLV library and through most of her years as a member, was Co-Chair of the Care and Concerns Committee. She died October 5, 2006 at the age of 98. Her generous bequest to the Fellowship has enabled the funding of the Social Concerns Committee which distributes money every year to social justice and environmental organizations—locally, nationally and internationally.

It is now named the Beulah Rosen Committee in her honor.

At the beginning of the fiscal year, the committee meets to disburse $6500 in funds to various organizations.
